I was imagining C3 first, then staff, but to forward email to Gmail from ICU accounts via ILC (as Bill & I do now), and staff can continue to use desktop clients like Eudora, Thunderbird, or Mail, so no change to ICU email addresses for sender or receiver OR how teachers prefer to manage email. Teachers do not have to use Gmail and can move over as and when they want to. I think this will happen naturally as people come to see the benefits of using Gmail as their nerve centre for sharing and collaboration. Integration is the key to (more) seamless workflow.

Students? No, at least not unless ILC come on board.

I've done some more checking on this and it doesn't appear that the Educational Edition will give us a lot more than the Standard Edition.  However, I am beginning to get a greater appreciation for what either edition will mean for the ELP and, unfortunately, I think we need more discussion and information before we decide what to recommend regarding Google Apps.

As I understand it now, any version of the Apps will require

All of our staff and students to get and use new email accounts (under our domain) in order to participate in the benefits of the apps.

Management of the domain and all the user accounts by someone in the ELP.  I'm not sure how technical this is, but it seems likely to be beyond the scope of the office staff.

state that we have not decided any proposals yet)

How to use the new Goffice account log in and calendar system is what I think we are proposing as a minimum. However, this is just a push in what we hope will be the right direction.  If people 'survive' this, they will hopefully be encouraged to go beyond and try other new things.

Comment:
My feeling about the 1st paragraph of the current proposal is that it is
trying to "alarm" the readers with how quickly things are changing in
some parts of the world (Web 2.0 etc.). While it may be true that things
are changing, I'm not sure "alarm" is the place we want to start-is it?
I don't think the audience will empathize with that unless mounting
evidence is presented. Most of us in the ELP feel fine with ourselves
for the most part. Change will only come willingly by strong
presentations of benefits.

This is a point well taken.  My intent was not to alarm, but to show relevance for our proposal.  I agree that we shouldn't try to alarm or shock people into acceptance of our proposals. On the other hand, I think we should provide our 'take' on what is developing and why it is important to us now and in the future.
