C3 Meeting Notes from 5/16/07
Bill distributed hard copies of the googledocs document he had drafted called C3 What do we want to do?, and which Owen had already added to and commented on.
Owen provided an additional list of items to consider:
1. Connective Reading and Connective Writing as new genres that our students will need to learn. These involve more distributed and linked information than traditional text-based reading and writing that calls for a single package of information presented in intro-body-conclusion form.
2. New literacies to help our students develop skills for understanding and participating in a "3rd space" for learning. The 1st space is independent study and the 2nd space is the classroom. The 3rd space is a networked online environment. To fully participate in this 3rd space, students may need to be required to develop new literacies/skills in such things as blogs, wikis, social bookmarking, etc. Part of the purpose and goal of this kind of literacy training would be to empower and encourage student initiated application of these tools to their own learning.
We discussed whether instruction related to these literacies should be incorporated throughout the ELP, focussed on in ALS, or perhaps provided outside the ELP. Dave mentioned that he thought that such a course might already exist as a requirement at ICU , but we will need to get more information on it.
3. USB drives as portable Personal Study Places (PSPs) These would provide a relatively standardized, portable and efficient access to the 3rd space for students and teachers.
Owen recommended that we try to utilize Web 2.0 tools to facilitate the retreat this Friday, but we decided that it is too early for this.
We also discussed establishing what basic infrastructure will be needed before we begin implementing any Web 2.0 tools across the ELP such as determining whether we need to standardize MAC vs PC platforms, browsers, calendar systems, etc. in order to maximize successful implementation. We also determined that making a report and then formally announcing any implementation of Web 2.0 tools as part of our C3 efforts was preferable to just starting to use them.
We finished our discussion with some thoughts on how to proceed from here. Bill mentioned that we need to provide two reports at the next ELP meeting on May 29 -- one on a recommended plan for new equipment acquisitions and the other a recommended long-term plan for the use of IT in the ELP. We agreed that Bill would produce report drafts that we will then collaborate on editing through Googledocs rather than having additional meetings before the 29th.
