notes from 4-27-07

Our loose agenda consisted of progress reports on our 23 things, a reminder of pending tasks (list of equipment purchases, plan for long term use of IT), and how to manage Moodle in future.

The discussion of the 23 things indicated some disparity in frustration levels.  The  combination of Google services is overwhelming to some of us and we questioned whether it was the way to go.

Owen proposed that the C3 group get trial subscriptions to the Google Premium service to see whether it might provide easier and better ways to work on calendars, documents, etc. He supported his proposal with the statement that, "Lack of collaboration is the thief of productivity."  Owen was immediately given the Benjamin Franklin Quote of the Meeting award.

Bill suggested that we will probably need to use a combined push/pull strategy in implementing any C3 services.  This would mean that some services will need to be required of everyone, such as a Google account that allows access to a common calendar, but others will be modelled and encouraged, but not required, such as social bookmarking or using  blogs as a way of automatically archiving emails and documents.

Regarding equipment purchase recommendations, we discussed the fact that what we really may need to do is work with ICU to establish better availability of equipment in all classrooms rather than trying to create an independent set of equipment.  For example, if each classroom had a computer station connected to a data projector and sound system, we could use MP3 files for listening and or video materials as well as slide shows, documents, etc.  This is currently a difficult and time consuming process to set up each class period.

The connection between C3 and our future use and management of Moodle remains an open question.

We decided to continue work on our 23 things.  (When we all get there, Owen recommends that we use "elpc3" as a tag in del.ici.ous to share what we find of interest on the Web.)

Our next meeting will be at 11:30 on Tuesday, May 15.
