Re: More on domain registration

Dear Bill & C3ers,

Best Products

The Number 1 Product of the Year

1. Google Apps Premier Edition
(Web applications; $50 per user per year) Google is much more than just a search engine, and with its invaluable Google Apps suite, the company is well on its way to challenging Microsoft for productivity-suite supremacy. Google's Docs & Spreadsheets (soon to be joined by a PowerPoint-esque presentation application) already makes for an interesting alternative to Microsoft Office. Combine it with Gmail, Google Talk, and Google Calendar, and suddenly nearly all of your basic productivity programs and data can be available online.

For small businesses that need more than the free versions offer, Google Apps Premier Edition adds capacity, support services, and tools for integrating existing infrastructure so that all your employees can use Google's powerful Web apps--no matter where they are. Printouts may never die, but if Google has its way, the office-less office may become a reality long before the paperless one does. Review | Vendor Site

I was imagining C3 first, then staff, but to forward email to Gmail from ICU accounts via ILC (as Bill & I do now), and staff can continue to use desktop clients like Eudora, Thunderbird, or Mail, so no change to ICU email addresses for sender or receiver OR how teachers prefer to manage email. Teachers do not have to use Gmail and can move over as and when they want to. I think this will happen naturally as people come to see the benefits of using Gmail as their nerve centre for sharing and collaboration. Integration is the key to (more) seamless workflow.

Students? No, at least not unless ILC come on board.

>Management of the domain and all the user accounts by someone in the ELP.  I'm not sure how technical this is, >but it seems likely to be beyond the scope of the office staff.

There is a litttle bit to it, especially during initial setup e.g. changing the MX records on our ELP host server, but it is not technical, there is no programming involved. Ongoing maintenance mainly would involve adding new users and deleting old ones.

Best,

Owen

Dear Bill,

I think we should first contact Google re. Education Edition. They did give agree to 600 accounts in my earlier request, but you did mention that they may have since added the rider that Ed. Edn. is available only in the US. If so, perhaps we then request the small business version.

I think we might need to investigate whether a 'free' BH domain will remain their property if we want to change hosts later (i.e. ICU server). If it is both free and transferable then it is not a problem I think.

The answer to above would inform the answer to how significant it is that we register elpicu.ac.jp vs icuelp.org?

Sorry for the late reply,

Owen.

Hi Owen,

I'm sorry I wasn't able to connect with you in person yesterday.  I am hoping to get a clearer picture of what we can and can't do regarding the Bluehost + Goffice platform we want to propose -- before our meeting next Tuesday.  I looked more into Bluehost and discovered that they do not support any domains that include ".jp " However, " icuelp.org" is available for free through them.  So, how significant is it that we register the domain name you proposed ( elpicu.ac.jp) vs icuelp.org?

It also appears that we can get 24 months of Bluehost for only $6.95.  After that, of course, it would go to $6.95 or more per month.

If you feel that the icuelp.org domain will work for us, then I will set up the account and then try to work through the set up of the Educational Goffice account as well.  I think that if we can do that now, we will be in a solid position to include that information in our report and proposal.

Thanks,

Bill
