Re: Meeting before the end of the year

HI,

I spoke with Dave today and he is OK for 8:30 on the 14th, so that is when we will meet.  Owen, should we meet in a lab room again?

Thanks,

Bill

Meeting before the end of the year

Hello all,

I know we haven't even started the winter term yet, but the time between now and the Christmas break will probably fly by.  I'd like to set up another C3 meeting before we break.  Please let me know if Friday, 12/14 at 8:30 will work for you all.

Cheers,

Notes on frustration resulting from group projects:

One of the biggest problems I face is scheduling a time when members of a group can all meet. I also find it hard when not everyone in a group fulfills their part of the work to be done.

My Working Docs feed

Dear C3ers,

Thanks to Bill's alert, I think I helped you to take an incomplete feed for Working Docs, so some of your docs may be missing from the feed. I will look into how to get the full, correct feed and then help you update.

Sorry for the problem.

Best,

Owen

Fwd from Owen: Calit2 Research Intelligence: My Research Profile

ELP C3ers, A virtual research community you may want to join - I  am in (soon anyways)!

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Jerry Sheehan < ri@calit2.net>
Date: Nov 14, 2007 9:25 AM
Subject: Calit2 Research Intelligence: My Research Profile
To: james@icu.ac.jp

Dear Calit2 Research Intelligence User:

Hello. I am writing to update you on some of the substantial changes to the Research Intelligence Portal (http://ri.calit2.net).

In the first release of the Research Intelligence portal we focused our efforts on Calit2 faculty members. However, as we analyzed our registered user base we realized there were a great number of staff and affiliated research users. In the past, these users were not able to have a "customized home" for their research. I am happy to announce that each of you will now have the opportunity to have a customized home based on a user profile that will provide you with greater utility from RI portal.

When you next login you will be redirected to a User Update page where we will ask you for a little more information needed to create the custom home for you. Once this data is entered you will have a unique profile page on the site a.k.a. "My Research" page.

Your private view of the profile will allow you to add keywords that could be used to describe your research interests [Research Strengths], upload documents and have keywords automatically suggested for you to be added to your research strengths [See Add E-Content under tools], and customize RSS feeds to be displayed on your "My Research" profile [See Edit My Feeds under tools]. Any of the data added to the site can also be exported for your own personal use or inclusion in other sites that you are part of [See Edit/Export Your Research Strengths].

We hope that you take the time to create a custom profile which will provide us with the data we need to direct a personalized view of new grant opportunities to you and also to make you aware of events at Calit2.

If you have any additional thoughts on features or our current implementation we would appreciate hearing them.

Sincerely,
Jerry Sheehan

Assuming it is OK for Dave, 10am to Noon on Tuesday the 20th seems to be the best new date/time.

C3 Meeting Minutes from 11-2-07

We first discussed the revised Equipment Survey and decided it was ready to use.  Bill will send an email requesting that instructors fill out the survey.

Bill reviewed his proposed plan to implement Google accounts and the use of an ELP Events calendar on Google from next April with any needed preparation for that to happen to take place in winter term. These are proposed minimum goals, with many more Web 2.0 resources and practices still to be worked on.

Owen proposed a plan for moving forward first within C3 itself on a limited set of skills and practices.  If this plan is successful, we may be able to propose more for ELP-wide implementation next Spring than Bill's minimum goals. The purpose of the plan is to move us forward in a more focused manner, following the period of consciousness raising we have been muddling through up to now.  It is also important that we develop significant first-hand experience in the use of these skills and practices in order to truly understand and appreciate their value before we attempt to spread them further within the ELP.

Owen's plan indicates that all C3 members do the following as soon as possible starting today:

1. Use Gmail as their primary email system.
2. Use, maintain and share among C3 members a personal Google calendar and that we use these calendars to set C3 meetings.
3. Use Googledocs for all file creation and that these files will have an RSS feed share as well as being posted to email.
4. Use a personal blog and share the url within C3
5. Use Delicious bookmarking and share our user names within C3
6. Use a Google Reader
7. Use Firefox on a memory stick as our default browsers

Not everyone in C3 understands what all of these points mean or entail at this point, and certainly we are at different points in our ability to implement them.  In order to determine where we all are, Owen will create a form on a web site for us to fill in. This will enable us to determine who needs what and track our progress towards what is needed.

The first training session will be Monday 11/5 at 11:00 in ILC 131. We should all fill in the "where we all are" form prior to then.

The plan is to establish our ability to do all of the seven things listed in the plan as quickly as possible and to continue with those practices until the end of the New Year's break.  At that point, we will determine what we want to do in terms of launching any of these practices within the wider ELP context.

We will also need learning sessions, both as a group and as individuals, to get us fully operational with this set of practices.  Owen has a number of  on line training resources that we can use from his SE class.  There are additional resources at the University of Manitoba site:  http://ltc.umanitoba.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Workshops_and_Resources

Fwd from Owen: [Connect-ed] University and web 2.0

Short article on web 2.0 in universities: http://www.universitybusiness.com/viewarticle.aspx?articleid=947&pf=1

What I find more interesting than the article is the format used. Each paragraph, when clicked, allows for editing (assuming you have permissions). I've seen this on other sites...and assume that it's some type of wiki format. Ah...the days when all the world is editable J.

Re: Agenda for 11-2-07 C3

Thanks for sending the agenda, Bill.

I think your proposal of C3 goals for winter/spring terms seems quite realistic and am looking forward to discussing it tomorrow.

Hello,

It appears that we are losing steam in our progress toward some sort of adoption of Web 2.0 resources to improve communication, collaboration and connectivity in the ELP.  This is partly because I am teaching this term and don't have as much time to work on things as I would like, and the rest of you are even busier than I am!

At this pace, I think that it would take years to design and implement a complete C3 'system of practice' based on a new domain, dedicated server space, and a wide array of Web 2.0 services.  Although that might be the most desirable outcome, and we might eventually get there, I think we will have to start much smaller and hope that we can increase our abilities organically until the time is ripe for a more systemic approach.

To that end, I would like to propose the following minimalist plan for initiating C3 practices in the ELP.  I've also listed questions that we probably need to answer in order to move ahead with this plan, if we adopt it.

Winter term 2007-2008:

Announce plans to adopt certain practices and standards effective for April, 2008.
Provide education and training as needed to prepare ELP staff for these practices.

Spring term 2008:

Implement

1. Create Google accounts utilizing ICU email addresses for all ELP staff. (PTLs will need to identify their official email for ICU matters)
2. Use of a Google based ELP calendar for scheduling all ELP events and meetings. (Who should have what kind of rights in the calendar?)
3. Use of Firefox as standard browser?
4. Initial ELP "Reader" (file archive similar in purpose to the current Teacher's site) with feeds from relevant sources? (Based on Reader, Blog or Wiki? How difficult would it be to move from one of these choices to another if we want to?)

In addition, we would encourage, but not require, use of other connectivity tools such as shared individual Google calendars, Groups (through Googlegroups, Ning, Facebook etc.), Googledocs or wikis for file sharing, social bookmarking (Delicious) using a list of standard ELP tags, and Readers (institutional and individual) with feeds from relevant sources.

(How much variation in these activities should we encourage? e.g. should we encourage one format for groups, wikis, etc?)

We also need to finalize the equipment survey and send our requests to fill it out.

I'm looking forward to another interesting meeting tomorrow!

Thanks,

Bill

Re: Agenda for 11-2-07 C3

Sorry, Owen again. To that end, I think our meetings should move for a
time to the computer room. I'd like to suggest that the first task is
to set up Firefox on a USB drive and develop it as a personal work
environment wired for communication and collaboration. Arigachi, Owen.

Re: Agenda for 11-2-07 C3

Dear C3ers,

I'd like our focus to narrow even more. I think the first success we
need to achieve is good levels of communication and collaboration
within C3 through better connectivity. The ELP strategy would be a
natural outgrowth of our strategies. However, we remain at this point
largely disconnected.

All the best,

Owen.

Agenda for 11-2-07 C3

Thanks,

Bill
