Re: Instructive graph of web office use

Hello all,

Thanks for sharing this, Owen.  I think it shows how far ahead of the curve we are!

It does raise the concern that in future Google may start charging for their services.  In the meantime, having both the Google suite and the desktop software provides the best of both worlds for me.

On another matter, Mark, Ged and I can all make it for a meeting on the 4th at 3:00.  Dave can't.

Owen?

Cheers and happy new year!

Bill

Re: Meeting Outline for 1/22/08

Hi,

I'm just typing out some ideas and questions in response to the Draft Meeting Outline for 1/22/08
Since I am not really adding to or revising the outline, I decided to put this in email rather than type directly into the shared document.
I think the flow of events as proposed is very nice and we just need to work on the details on Jan. 4th.

Is Jan. 4th 3pm confirmed?

Mark

Draft Meeting Outline for 1/22/08

1. Introduction: Goals, Purposes and Reasons for C3 plan

Purpose: Generate broad ownership of our goals and create willingness among teachers to participate in achieving those goals
Process:  Presentation by Director
TBD: Content of presentation. Include "Shift Happens"? "Medieval Helpdesk"? Local examples (ICUHS student podcasts and blogs, CM courses), include long-term goals/vision?

I think starting with the Medieval Helpdesk will be effective because it is a nice humorous jab at resistance to innovation. However, it should probably be prefaced with a clear statement that the purpose of the meeting is not to propose "required" changes, but to present a recommendation from C3 for a future collaboration and sharing system in the ELP that will be "optional" to join.

The challenge will be to design a presentation that can present the system and make the benefits for joining compellingly clear.

2. Small Group Task:
Purpose: Allow teachers to be heard and to contribute actively in the session
Process: Structured, brief task. e.g. List fears and concerns such as "Do I need to give up using a Mac?"  "Will there be someone to help me if I have problems?"
TBD: Task specifics

I think we should definitely have a small group task, but it may be more meaningful after the Basic Plan has been presented. Or, we might consider having two small group times with two different purposes.

3. Announce Basic Plan
Purpose: Provide details in a way that doesn't frighten, confuse or overwhelm teachers
Process: List a few new features that will be added to each teacher's computer by (April 1?), present time line for learning about these new features ( e.g. 1 year), and explain types of support and training resources we will provide.  Announce volunteer beta-group to begin testing the full vision from the outset.
TBD: Confirm what features we will start with, the time line and training resources

We'll need a nice web page that outlines the new features and directions for them in a friendly way. I'm happy to work on that.

4. Show some sample benefits of using the new features
Purpose: Excite people with examples of what they will be able to do with the new features and work practices
Process: Show screen shots that illustrate effective use of new features (e.g. shared calendars, publishing and tagging a document Readers receiving tag feeds, student use of features as part of courses.)
TBD: What examples to show

I thought this would be part of the "vision" shown at the beginning.

5. Announce follow up survey to help guide us in implementing the plan
Purpose: Allow for additional expression of concerns, gather information on individual needs and preferences
Process: Survey Monkey survey on What teachers know about and use now, any additional questions or concerns they may have, learning preferences such as individual tutorials vs workshops, willingness to participate as beta-group members.
TBD: Survey questions and deadline

I'd be happy to make a draft of this before or just after the Jan. 4th meeting. Obviously there are a lot of details to develop, and I'd be happy to work on any parts after we decide how to divide the work.

I'm looking forward to working on this next year.

Happy Holidays!

Mark

This would lead the ELP to establishing its own understanding of the need for small, but fundamental changes to how we work and teach to help ensure a vital, viable, an exciting future for the programme.

As a side note, as my own understanding of the scope and importance of current changes (some of which are included in Shift Happens) developed and what they meant to me as a contract teacher, they did create a fear inside me; a fear of becoming redundant. Unless I updated how I learned, how I worked, I feared ending up unwanted in the global market for teachers.

However, as a strategy to encourage change I would never recommend using fear as persuasion. It is true though, that for certain teachers at certain stages of their career and in certain positions, the world has become much scarier. If I had tenure or was better qualified, that fear would probably not exist. However, as a one-person business, fear of being unemployable is a reality for me. I hope I really do not sound melodramatic, but do hope that this helps you to understand some of my commitment to the importance of what we are attempting.

Best,

Owen.

C3 meeting notes for 12/14/07

C3 meeting notes for 12/14/07

We briefly reviewed the compiled equipment survey report.  Bill will further refine the information and prepare a draft report.

We adjourned to the computer lab to continue looking at the big picture of what we want to achieve through changes in work practice.  The general idea is to establish a community of practice within the ELP which leads to and supports an on-going process of collaboratively produced materials for use in our teaching as well as for administrative and professional purposes.  The main features of this community of practice will be:

1. Use of Google accounts including Google calendar, Googledocs, Gmail, and Google Reader.  Ideally, these would be run on Firefox browsers as standard practice to help ensure maximum compatibility and ease of training.

2. Individual teacher-created Blogs for each course and administrative function. These will be used as course homepages and will be open, social and accessible

3. Use of social bookmark (Delicious) tagging employing a common set of tags

4. A materials development and revision process that emerges from the three areas of practice listed above and which includes a design template that encourages adherence to common professional standards

This overall vision will need to be presented in such a way as to maximize teacher interest and willingness to engage in a necessary learning curve.  Successful implementation of the vision will also require careful planning and a fair amount of teacher and student training.  Our goal is to begin implementing as much of the vision as possible by April, 2008.

We have 70 minutes on January 22 plus the possibility of setting up personalized sessions with instructors at their computers in order to get ready for an April launch.

We felt the need for another meeting before the break to continue planning.  The only shot at a time for all of us to meet next week that I can guess at is Monday 5th period.
Please let me know if that won't work for anyone.  Otherwise, we could meet Friday 1st sans Dave.

Re: Post war Japan

Nice!
On the Pachyderm site, I found this one which could be a model for the ELP's future use.

ELP calendar in your pocket

Could be a useful additional way to make calendar information more easily accessible.

Re: Blogs at ICUHS

Hi Roddy,

Thanks very much for sharing this stuff.  It's great!  We have a group of ELP instructors who are working on finding ways to utilize Web 2.0 both for our work practice and for teaching.  One instructor in particular has been doing a lot with his students with blogs and wikis.  We'll be happy to share what comes out of all this and your example will be helpful in encouraging more of our instructors to get involved.

Cheers,

Bill

Bill-

This is Roddy Davis over at the high school.   It was good running
into you last week because I had been meaning to email you after
looking at your ELP blog.  Also, once again thanks for introducing me
to TED.com.

I have been doing podcasting for about 2 years now as part of a 3rd
year Media Studies class.  But this year I have also been
experimenting with posting extra material on a blog and having
students access these outside class time. And I just keep thinking
that the potential for enriching the curriculum through blogs is so
under-tapped that I want to get the word out.

Benefits:

Students do not need to be prodded to go on-line.  They love it.

Students can watch and listen to material at their own pace.  They can
re-wind and fast forward as they like.  They can watch the material
several times if they can't catch everything the first time.

Teachers can post some very interesting material that would have been
extremely difficult to find just a few years ago.  We are doing The
Tempest in a Level One class  and for  a pre-reading activity we
looked at the issue of colonialism through the Columbus story.  I
posted an old 1950s cartoon which told the traditional heroic story of
Columbus and through that we examined bias in history.  And we then
compared the cartoon to modern  versions of the story which tell of
the genocide and slave trade that Columbus was responsible for.

English classes are limited to 4 hours per week yet by posting
material on the blog, teachers can extend the classroom beyond the
3:10 chime.   Rather than showing a documentary or film in class and
eating up valuable classtime, we can have the students watch the
mateial in their own time, leaving more time for in class activiteis
and discussion.  Also, having students watch material in a dark
classroom is an invitation for some students to catch up on sleep.
Whereas, of they watch the material in their own time and they are
assigned some questions or writng activity, I'll bet that they are
concenrating more than they would in a dark classroom.

I have just begun to experiment with this kind of thing and am still
collecting material and developing intersting ways to use them.  But I
can say that it has opened up lots of potentially interesting projects
and am hoping to spread the gospel of resource blogs to fellow
teachers at the high school.

If you are interested, please check out the four blogs that I have
been using for ICUHS classes.
