Hi,

The results of the survey we conducted after the last training session indicate at least 14 people who have requested individual training sessions. This is my draft of a checklist we might want to use for these sessions. Once we have agreement on what we will try to do in the sessions, we can start divvying up the people we will consult with

My TW course will be in GDS this semester, so I thought this might be of interest. If it works, I think it is going to make things a lot easier.

Re: Presentation tomorrow

OK then, I had forgotten subscribing to Delicious can be a bit sticky as well. It sure is handy when it is complete and in order though, like in okok22oj AND in my FeedDemon. Best, Owen.

The problem with having people add their own tag feeds is that that is a very erratic proposition and sometimes requires doing it over and over, sometimes for days, before it works. If people have difficulty getting any feeds, I think they will give up on the process.

If they upload the file and they still need to add one or two feeds, they still get to practice doing that, but have at least something to look through and search right away.

We should warn people that this short cut isn't perfected yet, but I think having something to work with right away is good, and we can try to provide a better file later if we can work it out.

I do not think it would make a difference, but as you have discovered, anything might happen!

I think, we should just go with teachers subscribing individually to their courses. For ARW & RCA, this would mean repeating the step 7 times or so. That wont take very long at all, compared to digging around in HD272, and they get access to everything that is available. It is also an important skill for teachers to learn, so they can use the Reader to collect what they want.

You are meeting the kind of problems I encountered. The problem is probably bigger though. If you do it over and import the same file again, it may produce a different folder structure. This means that if 25 teachers import it, there may be 25 different results! Can you try over? Delete everything and re-import. That should give us some indication of any progress.

Hi Owen,

Thanks for all your work on this.  I created a new Google account and uploaded the file you sent me into the reader.

Here is what resulted:

12 folders with a total of 64 feeds.

Some tag feeds seem to be missing -- e.g. ARW VoF and ARW IOR

There is an odd (empty) feed in the CS folder called Public Relations.  I'm not sure where it came from.

Some folders when you click on them say "no items", but if you click on the "+" beside the folder, and then click on one of the feeds listed for that folder, you get items.  The ICU folder is an example.

Overall, the imported reader still looks good and except for the points above seems to work well.  if you want to look at this reader it is in

user: icuelpc3
pw: ourelpC3

The big question is should we have people upload this file even with these glitches?  My feeling is that it is close enough and certainly better than having everyone try to build their own by adding feeds one at a time.  Better to start with an imperfect reader and then add a couple more feeds as needed.  That is my sense anyway.

If it will help, I can try to add any missing feeds to the file as it came into the icuelpc3 reader and then send it to you as a xml file, or would that just yield a less clean file than you have now?

Cheers,

Bill

If it does not produce the folder structure in okok22oj, I think we should abandon giving teachers the courses database for now.

Instead, teachers can import the course feeds they need one at a time. You should use okok22oj to show what the complete database looks like.

Re: Presentation tomorrow

Hi,

I tried importing the same file again after deleting everything first.  I got the same folders and feeds, but this time everything was marked as read, and all of the folders when I clicked on them said no items, but if I clicked on any of the feeds in the folders I got items.

Should I have downloaded the file again or just re-uploaded the one I had downloaded earlier?

Hi Bill,

You are meeting the kind of problems I encountered. The problem is probably bigger though. If you do it over and import the same file again, it may produce a different folder structure. This means that if 25 teachers import it, there may be 25 different results! Can you try over? Delete everything and re-import. That should give us some indication of any progress.

Best,

Owen.

I am really busy today, still.

Dear C3ers,

I tested importing the database file again just to check that results were reliable. However, the collection it produced in the test Reader was missing 4 folders. I created these 4 folders again in the test Reader and added the feeds to them, so now the database in the test Reader is complete and organised correctly. This is the file that I am sharing with you now and is linked to in the session handout.

I have tried importing a few different files a few different ways and I hope this file is the most reliable, but I do not have more time now to test it anymore.

Can a couple of C3ers please import this attached file into their reader and check that it returns 12 folders, with all feeds in a folder?

Thank you for your help.

Best,

Owen.

Re: New OLN Courses Database file for import to Google Reader

Hi Owen,

On another note, I did manage to get your LRB article up and running with links intact.  As you indicated, it required work using Acrobat Pro that I was able to do in the ILC computers.  As Shakespeare said, "All is well that ends....."
