Re: ELP C3: Presentation One - Speaking note suggestions on techie bits

Hi ya,

Just clarifying:

> Bill said - We may also create a Page Flakes or Ning, or some other social networking site, but I think that will come later.

Pageflakes is a one-stop information aggregator, in this way it can be used a whole program database by collecting the ELP courses & admin databases in one place.

A Ning is a different beast. Individuals in the ELP can connect to other individuals & groups in the ELP in a Ning. A ning leverages the power of connectivity to support good communication.

Both can be important parts of a strategy towards better C3 in the ELP.

I feel much better about how the presentation is shaping up!  I also want to explain the last screenshot slide.  Owen had suggested that we show the Page Flakes site as a sample of our common ELP site and archive, but at this point I think it is more likely that we will use the corporate Google site than Page Flakes.  Since this is still in development, though, I only plan to say that we will have some common archive site that will hopefully have a searchable Reader which subscribes to all the ELP tags, etc. like the one in the slide.  We may also create a Page Flakes or Ning, or some other social networking site, but I think that will come later.

Cheers,

Bill

Some Suggested Speaking Notes on the Techie Bits (Your revisions are welcomed)

In this part of the presentation I think we need to emphasise that individual use of selected, simple social technologies will transform how we currently work.

The practices the technologies can be leveraged to support will simplify work and make work easier to do at the personal level and at level of the program.

However, we should not shy away from giving people a sense of the size and scope of the changes C3 is promoting.

What follows is a first draft. It contains some unnecessary repetition. It is also slightly evangelical in tone, which you might like to edit out while still preserving the message ;-).

In suggested order of mention:

(** Offline access is just around the corner!)

Delicious
  • Collaboration: Have a distributed database for all courses and admin functions. Yay!
  • Accessible: Shared resources and materials are all in one place, accessible online anywhere, any time
  • Automatic: Database is refreshed via 'two-click' individual work practice

Google Reader
  • Automatic: Receive hourly updates of materials for individually selected courses etc. via your browser to your desktop
  • Accessible: All shared materials & resources all in one place, accessible online anywhere, any time
  • Smart: Want something, can't quite remember what it was called or who the author was? Google search works, fast

Google Docs
  • Convenient: Create & access your documents, spreadsheets, and presentations online anywhere, any time
  • Collaborate: Invite others to work with you on one document, say goodbye to creating multiple copies as email attachments
  • Publish: Two-clicks and add your materials to the courses/admin database hosted at Delicious

Gmail
  • Accessible: All your emails available in one place, accessible online anywhere, any time
  • Simplify: One message out & all replies = one conversation; inboxes decluttered instantly
  • Convenient: Have a complete archive (no delete)
  • Smart: Integrates with Google Calendar, automatically senses dates and times in messages
  • Essential: Is the 'beating heart' of 'Goffice'

Google Calendar
  • Collaboration: Leverage easier and simpler program-level coordination (Director-Assistant Director-ELP Office-Coordinators-Teachers) and course-level coordination (coordinator-teachers, teachers-teachers)
  • Communication: e.g. In-house ELT conferences calendar

Re: ELP C3: Presentation One - Speaking note suggestions on techie bits

Dear Bill,

I have updated the speaking notes, adding a suggestion on how to organise the slideshow itself and what could be included and said about a new Part III. In terms of amount of content I have not added much, but I think this structure will help to make our the big picture clearer and Part III is an important addition to complete the picture.

I am sorry, I do not think I will have any time to make any changes to the slideshow myself until after Tuesday, I hope that this in some way compensates for leaving you to make the slideshow basically on your own.

Thank you,

Owen.

C3 Minutes for 1-11-08

We reviewed the draft presentation and Mark's draft of the Survey.

Owen proposed adding more slides to the beginning of the presentation to provide a better sense of the big picture.  He will work on creating slides to add along these lines and show them to us at or before our rehearsal on the 17th.  The final content and activities of the presentation are still to be determined.

Mark has revised the survey based on our input and it seems pretty much ready.

We decided to change the venue of the presentation from the MMR to ILC 163 to make it seem more cozy and to de-emphasize the role of technology.  Bill has reserved 163 for the presentation on the 22nd as well as on Thursday, the 17th for our rehearsal at 1:30.  However, we only have the room on the 17th from 1:30 to 3:00. It's in use after that.

We will need a laptop and to make arrangements for a key to the AV system in 163 for both the 17th and 22nd.

Following the meeting on the 11th, Dave was able to successfully save an html version of the presentation on his Mac.  Bill still hasn't been able to get it saved on his PC.

Hello all,

I have up-dated the 1/22 meeting outline based on our discussions yesterday.  If the basic content looks OK to you all, I will begin making a PP presentation. You should be able to still see the document in your googledocs accounts.  If not, let me know.

Still be to determined is what screen shot samples we want to show to illustrate how the new services will be fun/useful/better .  I'll try to find things, but if any of you have ideas, please send them along.

Also, please give Mark any ideas you have for the survey.

Additional notes from yesterday:

1. It seems to be best to use the corporate Google account (helpicu) as our archive site and ask people to access it by opening a second browser. The main purpose of this site would be to house a Google Reader that would subscribe to all work-related tags, document feeds, blogs, etc.

2. We need to consider how we can best archive documents which are not suitable to be published.  One idea is to create a second corporate Google account which could be included in shared, but not published documents.  The Director would control access to this account.

3. We need everyone to have a Google account and to either use it as their main work email system (with ICU mail forwarded to it), or to forward their Gmail email to whatever email system they do use for work.  Gmail addresses will be the default work emails from April 1. 2009. We will encourage people to use Gmail as that will be the easiest and simplest in the long run, but some people may find that too much to deal with all at once.

4. We decided not to try to demonstrate anything in the meeting on the 22nd using a live internet connection.  We will need to find a room for the meeting that has a large screen and good data projector system to show the slides and screen shots and where we can have small group discussions.

5. We will need to meet again prior to the 22nd.  How does Friday the 11th first period sound?

Cheers,

Bill

Cheers,

Bill
