Re: C3 Meeting Notes for Feb. 27, 2008 - Mark's ideas

Hi Mark, and welcome back.  I'm glad your family is doing better.

Thanks for your ideas on the C3 stuff.  I think you are right that we will need to follow up on some folks to get them on board by the 7th.  We can all see where things stand in the spreadsheet that I created and shared called ELP 2.0 identity data.  I'll plan to send out a reminder to the ones who haven't completed things yet. Then we can try dividing up those who still need to be pestered to do this.  Owen is away in Tasmania until the end of March, and Dave is still on leave, so most of the pestering may need to be done by you, me and Ged.

As for preparing something for the 7th, I have just gotten a program that allows me to create screencasts.  I will try working something up and share it with everyone for comment. I think it may work better than a set of slides, but we'll see.

We will definitely need a meeting before the 7th.  I'll send out a Timebridge invitation for sometime around April 1.

Hi C3ers,

I'm back in action after a very nice CamTESOL conference trip. I arrived home to a house full of influenza infected family members and was busy playing nurse. As of today, all have recovered and I seem to be healthy.

Thanks for the meeting notes, Bill. Looks like a great discussion.

I agree that some of our main priorities are to develop a user-friendly document/resource system for C3 practices that ELP members can use to educate themselves. The resource should also include a space for members to interact on issues that arise. Raising open-mindedness and awareness about the importance of create-share-republish ethos is a high priority as well and should be done through the resource and through training sessions such as the upcoming one on April 7.

Prior to April 7th, I imagine we need to:

A. Follow up on ELPers who have not created Gmail/Delicious accounts and gotten Firefox.
Proposal: Should each of us be in charge of following up with a group of teachers? Ged - tenured instructors, Mark - RCA teachers/Part-timers, Owen - ARW teachers, Bill - Office staff, something like that?

B. Plan the flow of the session: 1. Calendar skills + 2. Show how "create-share-republish" can work + 3. Discussion on other issues sounds good to me. If we agree on the basic flow, shall we proceed to creating a draft Google Presentation slide set?

C. Have some type of resource center up and running so that we can introduce it. I'm not sure of the best way to design this. Any ideas from the discussion? I'd be happy to work on it over the break.

D. Have a meeting to finalize the training seminar content/flow. Will the next meeting be April 1st?

I will be around pretty much all of March, disappearing briefly 3/14-16 and 3/21-24 if anyone would like to meet. Otherwise, I would imagine we can do a lot of development on A, B, C above by web tools too.

What does everyone think about A, B, C above?

C3 Meeting Notes for Feb. 27, 2008

Ged, Bill and Owen met for lunch and a review of where we are now and where we might be headed with C3.  We organized our discussion around what thoughts each of us have now:

1. Ged:  Important issues now are how we create a document/resource system.  We need something that will be accessible, manageable, organized and monitored, easy to contribute to and centralized.  This system should also meet the needs of both experienced and new instructors.

Another important issue is after April 1, 2008, we need to respond to things as they emerge and provide help/encouragement especially to coordinators in using the new Web tools.  We may need a moratorium ( e.g. 1 year) on imposing any new elements to the C3 plan.

We also need to set up workshops on how to do things with the new tools.

2. Bill:  Important issues now are developing a resource management system, a training system, improving current and future business practices at ICU (e.g. ability to use credit cards), improved support from ILC and classroom services, and finding ways to encourage the use of the new Web tools to benefit students' learning.

Owen asked us what skills we think teachers need related to the C3 plan.  Bill said "document" creation skills meaning any kind of instructional resource creation (e.g. screencasts) and Ged mentioned open mindedness.

3. Owen: Important issues now are how to instill the concept of "create it, share it, republish it" as a standard work practice and ethos.  This implies several things:

  • Shift from a view of educational resources as static and packaged (e.g. the ELP Reader) to tapping into a dynamic flow of information and resources.  This will lead to a different organization of ELP communication.  What will it look like?
  • A new course development process.  What will it look like?
  • Strategic development of C3 as a group of individuals who have key roles in other areas of the ELP e.g. Coordinators should be included in C3 in some way.
  • Provide training/professional development that is professionally done, proactive and flexible.
  • Ultimately, we will want teachers to include homepages for their courses.  These sites will receive filtered material from the information stream created by the "create it, share it" components we have already introduced.  The homepages constitute the "republish it" segment and complete the cycle of work practice we envision.  This will replace current static material with more dynamic content.  This may involve a "public planning space" where teachers can see how other teachers are filtering, selecting and combining information for their courses before they are put on the homepages for students. Such a planning space could also serve to provide a greater level of professionalism and consistency to teachers' homepages and course content.

A major issue that surfaced from all of this discussion is how we can/should balance the need for both standardization and teacher autonomy.  The status quo seems to be that whatever degree of standardization we have now comes primarily from the materials we use.  If one of the implications of the C3 plan is to shift toward using more dynamic materials, we could lose all standardization. We concluded that what would make the most sense would be to strengthen the areas of course objectives and assessment practices that are clearly linked to those objectives.  If we can create standard objectives and effective ways of assessing how well students have achieved them, then teachers could have more autonomy in selecting materials and activities designed to help students achieve the objectives.

The final topic of discussion was what to do on April 7 during the 2-hour session we have scheduled for the whole ELP.

Bill's original suggestion was to demonstrate how to use the calendar basics and then break into small groups for Q&A and demonstrations of other aspects of the C3 tools.  Owen suggested, and we agreed,  that we also need to work on raising consciousness about the cycle of create -- share -- republish that demonstrates the complete application of work practice we envision.  The main difficulty we face is not being able to work together on preparing for this meeting until April 1.
