Title: Promoting Program-Wide C3 with Social Software
Short summary (75 words): C3 = Communication, Collaboration, Community. This presentation will describe how the English Language Program at International Christian University, Tokyo has adopted the use of freely available online social software (Google services and Del.icio.us in particular) to stimulate "C3" work practices on a program-wide basis.
Abstract (150-250 words): How can instructors and administrators in large scale ELP programs most efficiently communicate, collaborate, and build a sense of community? Since April 2007, the ELP at ICU has been moving forward with an initiative called "ELP C3" to train all staff to create, share, and archive documents online using a variety of free Google services including Gmail, Google Documents, Googe Calendar, and Google Groups. Based on their experiences as committee members in charge of planning and implementing the c3 initiative, the presenters will describe the background, rationale, system design, benefits, implementation steps, current level of success, and potential risks of ICU's use of free online social software services. The presenters will argue that the benefits outweigh any potential risks, with the main benefits being increased efficiency in relation to 1) sharing ideas on curriculum and program management documents such as class worksheets, 2) collaborating in the creation of documents, and 3) archiving past documents.
