Re: Rethinking document naming

Hi C3,

This is definitely worth thinking about some more. Lots of related issues flash, but I feel I still need time to see what the whole picture might look like.

One related point that is that course level sites like ELP ARW Fall should soon be searchable, which might make them a first stop for more teachers. If so, it is worth noting that course sites do return the whole document name when the cursor is rested on it.

Regards,

Owen.

I see Bill's point. If we can't find a Reader based solution  to the partial names (like changing the settings with a software download of some sort - or complain to the Google team), it may make sense to re-arrange the protocol. -Mark

Hi,

One of the more important elements in the C3 plan is creating a document naming system that provides as much clarity and ease of search as possible.  One thing I noticed today is that when tagged documents show up in my Google Reader or in one of the RSS feed boxes on the course homepages, the title of the tagged document is sometimes complete, sometimes not.  I don't know what leads to this variation.  Also, when you put your cursor over the document name in the Reader, you don't see anything, but in the RSS feed boxes I do get a small pop-up which sometimes, but not always, shows the full document name.  I always get a pop up in the RSS feed box, but many times the information is the same as what my cursor is pointing at -- a partial document title.

Unless we can change this situation, we may want to think about not putting things like "ARW CPC" at the beginning of document titles. This information is somewhat redundant since the tag used for the document is already given in the reader. I suggest we put the most relevant information in the document name at the beginning and put the more organizational and tagging information last.  E.g.

Barna: Pre-Reading Questions (Hs08) ARW CPC

which might show up as "Barna: pre-Reading Questions..." in the reader.  I think this would be preferable to getting  "ARW CPC Barna: pre.."

Having all the information is still important for searches and because shared docs in Googledocs don't have tags.  Fortunately, in Googledocs, the full document titles appear.

Other thoughts?

Bill
