Have you looked at your Google Reader recently? It can take a little practice to get familiar with it, but you will find it useful as more and more ELP documents go online.

When you are in Gmail, one of the links at the top of the page along with Calendar and Documents is Reader. Try clicking on that if you haven't recently.

A Reader is a tool that helps you get automatic updates from web resources such as news sites or blogs or other services like Delicious.

Here's a 1-minute video that explains the Reader.

In your Reader in the lower left side under Subscriptions, you probably already have a list of ELP folders such as ARW or RCA which you installed during a C3 training session. If you click on these, you are seeing a database of online ELP resources that is constantly being updated.

For example, if you want to look for TW ideas in general, you can click on the TW folder and feed named "elptw". You'll see a bunch of links and Google Docs for TW. Since there are many resources, the best way to filter through them is to use the Search box at the top. You can search through all items, or just one folder by using the pull-down menu next to the box. Try searching for "syllabus" in the TW folder to see a variety of syllabus docs other teachers have shared.

Of course you can also subscribe to other useful sites such as Academic Commons or your friend's blogs. Here's info on how to subscribe.

Also, if you want to upgrade your Google Reader, we recommend installing the Better Google Reader add-on for your Firefox browser. Just click here and install. You'll like it.

Of course, if you have questions, just ask a C3 person like Bill, Dave, Ged, Mark or Hiroshi or others  like Rab who use their Reader.

Re: C3 Newsletter draft: Using Google Reader

Hi Mark,

This looks very good to me.  My only comment is whether we should remind everyone about how to tag sites and googledocs in Delicious so that they can contribute to the Reader.  Maybe that can be a follow-up newsletter article?

Can you post your article when you are ready?

Cheers,

Bill

Re: More follow up to our last meeting

That looks very good, Bill. Nice tips! I didn't know about the landscape issue.

I don't see any need for revision, but it may be good to add something about what to do when the Print button does not respond. This seems to occur sometimes (Is it just me?), so what I do is go to Print Settings and click Print from there. That usually (though not always) seems to solve it. I added a 3rd point below about that.
For ideas on future articles, I would say...we did Gmail and Gdocs, so next could be something on GReader or Delicious, sort of a refresher on how Delicious plays a role in our system. I'd be happy to work something up if that seems good.

Also, are we set for mentor/mentee groups?

Hello all,

As you will have noticed, I have kicked off the weekly C3 newsletter with short tips on using C3 tools.  I have another posting drafted and would like any feedback you have on it.

Here are some tips on printing Googledocs:

1. Under "Print Settings" (which is found by clicking "File") you can adjust the size of top, bottom, left and right margins.  By decreasing the margins you can fit more onto a page, often reducing the number of pages needed for the document.  Also under "Print Settings" you can choose "Portrait" or "Landscape", and the paper size.  Selecting "A4" should give you a little more space on the page than "Letter".   Print Settings is also where you can select whether and where to print page numbers.  Note that if you have selected "Landscape" in the Googledoc print settings, you also need to select Landscape in your printer options before you print.

2. Under "Insert" you can select "Page Break (for printing)" This will show up as a faint line in your document on the screen.  When you print the document, a new page will start just below the Page Break line.  To remove a page break from a document, point the cursor on the line, then right click your mouse and choose "delete."

3. If the Print button does not seem to respond, it is best to go to Print Settings as explained above and print from the print settings menu.

If anyone has ideas for future posts, please let me know.

Thanks,

Bill

Here's my quick feedback, for what it's worth.

1. I agree with Mark that the tip of the week article looks very useful.

2. I haven't filled out the Can Do list yet but I think the idea is very good and I will fill it out sometime very soon (though I have to admit that I'll probably have a much shorter list of WTs (willing to teach) than other C3ers, an issue I need to address myself).

3. I think the list of "mentee" groups that Mark has come up with looks good. I'm at least comfortable with my group, although I'm also willing to work with anyone else as needed. (I've been working with some of the RCA teachers about using G-docs for tutorial appointments, managing Google Groups, etc.)

4. I have no problem with the unveiling of the "helpicu" account.

See you in the ELP Meeting!

2. I'm guessing we will get a clearer idea of how to develop and use the "Can Do" list as we support the staff we are in charge of. I'd be happy to work on it one more step, especially to add links to the list so that users can click on the skill and get more info about it.

3. Which staff we will work with - Just to get the discussion going, I guess one possible way is to tentatively divide by ARW programs and RCA floors and then swap members as needed. How does the following look?

Bill  RCA 2nd floor - Kota, Atsuko T, Kumi, Akiko, Asako
Hiroshi RCA 3rd floor - Mikiko, Masuko, Izumi, Atsuko
Ged  Prog. C ARW - Ken, Mike, Paul, Rob
Dave  Prog. B ARW - Susan, Steve, Lynn, Miguel, Jim, Rab
Mark  Program A ARW - Crystabel, Audrey, Chris Hale, Chris Hoskins, Sylvan

My group seems good to me, but I'm happy to mentor many of the RCA teachers on the 2nd floor too.

4. Unveiling helpicu / ihelpicu -- I think there is no problem to telling people about it, but I wonder if it may be a bit abstract for most people to understand? An email sent just before or after the announcement might be helpful to show in writing what it can be used for and lead people to try it and poke around.

2.  I haven't received any feedback on the proposed "I can do list" (see minutes of our last meeting) except from Mark.  Do we want to go forward with this either as a personal checklist we use with people we work with or as a public spreadsheet as Mark has proposed?

3. Is anyone interested in taking on the job of deciding on which ELP staff we will work with?

4. I would like to officially unveil "helpicu" at the ELP meeting on 9/29.  Does anyone object to that and or have suggestions on how best to do it?

Re: 2004 ELP Evaluation revised.pdf

Bill,

It works fine.

Ged

2009/10/2 <wcharshbarger@gmail.com>

I've shared a document with you:

2004 ELP Evaluation revised.pdf
http://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0ByfATrl4ptDjOWYzNGFmYmItNDgwMS00ZTMzLWIxZmItN2Y3Y2RmOTM5OGQz&hl=en

It's not an attachment -- it's stored online at Google Docs. To open this
document, just click the link above.

Hi C3ers.

I am testing how best to share pdf googledocs.  This one is a compilation
of date from an ELP survey sent to CLA faculty in 2004.  It contains
information that will be useful to refer to during our reform related
curriculum work.

Please let me know if you can access this file and have any problems with
it.  If this works, I will share it with the whole ELP.

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill,

The pdf looks very clear to me. Very nice information!

For some of the data, I'm curious to see more details. Are the full results available somewhere?

Thanks,

Bill

Re: More follow up to our last meeting

Hi Bill and Mark,

I apologize profusely for my much delayed response.

Hiroshi

Thanks!

If not, please go ahead and schedule the meeting without me. (I can always ask one of you to fill me in on what was discussed in the meeting if that's not too much trouble.)

Hi Bill, Dave and Ged,

A start-up meeting for the post-Owen era definitely sounds good.

Unfortunately, I'll be in Sapporo for JACET and wonder if a different

Would the afternoon of 9/1 or 9/2 work at all? I'm free on both
afternoons 2-6pm at this point.

Re: Meeting at the beginning of Fall

I'm not sure who is involved with the RCA new teachers orientation meeting at 3:30 on the 1st, but if none of us C3ers are, then we could meet after the main ELP meeting around 2:30 or 3.

I'll schedule that tentatively for now.

Thanks,

Bill

Re: NTD assignments for new teacher

Hi Bill & C3ers,

On their own computer skills are not very important, because C3 is really not about computers, it is much more about enhancing teaching and learning as a social activity. That said though, if Jim is interested in such use of social technologies, his skills could certainly be mined. However, five  is also a very effective size for a working group.

Best,

Owen.
